Fruit

A fruit tree works twice a year: once for the current year's fruit, and once for the following year's buds. If the soil is exhausted, one of these cycles is sure to suffer—and usually, the quality of the fruit is the first casualty: smaller size, paler color, weaker sugar content. Nutrients for the tree, nutrients for the microbes—one without the other is half a job.
