The geranium secret: this keeps it blooming non-stop until October

There are balconies where the geraniums tire out by the end of June – and there are ones where they pour out flowers until October. The difference is not in the variety and not in luck, but in three simple habits kept up consistently.

Secret 1: the geranium is a big eater – it asks for potassium, a lot of it

In the small amount of soil in a balcony box, a geranium uses up the potting medium's entire nutrient supply within a few weeks – after that, it lives only on what you give it. Continuous bud formation requires potassium above all: it drives the flowering and makes the colors vivid. Add the elevated-potassium Garden Geranium nutrient solution to the watering water twice a week – this is the most common point where the balconies that “tire out by late June” bleed out: once-a-month feeding is not enough for this plant.

Secret 2: a spent flower is not decoration but a brake

As soon as a flower head fades, the plant's energy switches to seed production – and it stops manufacturing new buds. So snap or cut out the spent flower stems at their base, at least once a week. This 5-minute habit alone visibly extends the blooming – the plant feels it hasn't finished its job yet.

Secret 3: morning watering, at the base – and never on the foliage

Geraniums tolerate sun and heat, but a balcony box dries out fast: in critical periods you may need to water daily – always in the morning, always at the base. Water splashed on the foliage and flowers brings spotting and fungal disease. In a heatwave, apply the nutrient solution at the label's lower dose, early in the morning – we wrote more about the summer heat rules here.

And if the blooming has already stopped?

It's not too late. Cut back the spent parts, restart the twice-weekly feeding, and in 2–3 weeks bud formation resumes – the geranium is one of the most grateful balcony plants and responds quickly to good care. For your other potted and balcony greens, you'll find the targeted nutrient solutions in the Balcony & Houseplant category – and if you'd like to cover all your balcony and houseplant care in one go, there's the Green Oasis Package, geranium nutrient solution included.
