Black spot on the bottom of your tomato? It's not a disease – here's how to save the harvest

You nursed the seedlings for weeks, the bushes are full of beautifully developing fruit – then one morning you see it: a dark, dried-out spot spreading on the bottom of your finest tomatoes. The first thought is always the same: it must be a disease, time to spray. But blossom-end rot is not an infection – and that's exactly why the fix is much faster than you'd think.

What is this spot, really?

The dark brown, then black, hard, leathery spot appearing on the bottom of the tomato – at the blossom end – is blossom-end rot. It is not a fungus, not a bacterium, and not a virus, but a physiological disorder: not enough calcium reaches the tip of the fruit to build cell walls, so the tissue there collapses and dies.

Two important things follow from this. The first is good news: blossom-end rot does not spread from plant to plant, and the other, intact fruits on the bush are perfectly safe to eat. The second: fungicide sprays are useless here – there is nothing to kill. Anyone who starts spraying at this point loses time and money while the real cause keeps working.

Why does it develop – even when there is calcium in the soil?

Blossom-end rot rarely means the soil is completely lacking calcium. The typical problem is that the calcium does not reach the fruit. Calcium moves in the plant exclusively with the water stream, and once it has been built into the leaves, the plant can no longer redirect it to the fruit.

The most common triggers: uneven watering (a sudden large dose of water after dry days), prolonged heat, when the plant transpires water almost only through its leaves, acidic soil, which keeps calcium in a bound form, and excessive nitrogen or potassium fertilization, which simply crowds calcium out during uptake.

What to do today

First, remove the already spotted fruits – they will not heal, but they needlessly tie up the plant's resources. Second, make your watering even: more often and less at a time, rather than rarely and a lot, and spread mulch under the plants so the soil moisture stays stable.

Third – and this is the fastest intervention – supplement calcium directly through the foliage and fruit.
