
Soil structure and water management – why is the root zone key?
When a plant in your garden isn't thriving, the instinctive reaction is to add nutrients. But what if the problem isn't with the nutrients, but with the physical structure of the soil? Soil structure and water management determine how roots develop, how they access air and water – and ultimately, nutrients.
What is good soil structure?
Ideal soil is crumbly, airy, and permeable. Tiny soil particles are loosely bound together, with pores between them allowing air and water to flow. This structure guarantees three things at once: roots can grow easily, excess water drains away, and the necessary moisture remains in the pores.
Poorly structured soil – whether too compact or too loose – cannot provide at least one of these. Compacted clay soil doesn't let water through, while sandy soil doesn't retain it. In both cases, the root zone suffers.
The relationship between water management and the root zone
The root zone is the few tens of centimeters deep layer where the plant's active roots are located. Everything is decided in this zone: water and nutrient uptake, oxygen supply, and microbiological activity. If the soil here is compact and water-resistant, the roots suffocate. If it's too loose and dry, they dehydrate.
Good water management means that after rain or irrigation, water infiltrates quickly, excess drains away, but the soil retains moisture in its micropores for days. This balance ensures that the plant is never too dry or too wet.
How to improve soil structure?
Calcium also plays a key role here. Calcium ions help soil particles aggregate – that is, for particles to form stable crumbs. This is especially important in clay soils, where calcium deficiency leads to compaction and the formation of a water-impermeable layer.
Regular application of Kalcinol not only improves pH but also soil structure: a more crumbly structure results in better drainage, more air, and stronger root development. In addition, organic matter – compost, mulch – also significantly contributes to stable soil structure.
The quality of the root zone determines the future of the plant. If the structure, water, and air are in order there, everything else – nutrients, growth, yield – follows naturally.
