
How to feed your soil microorganisms?
Most gardeners focus on plants: what to water, what to fertilize with, when to prune. But the real question is not what the plant receives – but what the soil receives. More precisely: what do the microorganisms living and working in the soil receive.
The Needs of Microorganisms
The bacteria and fungi living in the soil have needs just like any other living organism. Three basic conditions are required for their active function: appropriate pH, sufficient oxygen, and nutrients.
pH is the most critical factor. Most beneficial soil bacteria are most active in the neutral range (pH 6.0–7.2). If the soil is acidic – which is very common in Hungary – microbiological activity drastically decreases. In such cases, Kalcinol, as a natural calcium source, helps restore the optimal pH without overburdening the system.
Nutrient Supply That's Not Just for the Plant
When you apply a nutrient solution, it’s not exclusively an energy source for the plant. Some of the nutrients also feed the microorganisms – especially the nitrogen and carbon-containing components. This dual effect makes regular fertilization so effective: it simultaneously strengthens the plant and activates soil life.
Granulated fertilizers dissolve slowly and gradually, thus providing replenishment over the long term. Nutrient solutions, however, act immediately because the nutrients are directly available in dissolved form. The combination of the two – weekly nutrient solution, granulated every two months – yields the best results.
The Role of Soil Structure
In compacted, airless soil, microorganisms do not get enough oxygen, and their activity slows down. Therefore, loosening the soil is important, especially in spring. This is less of a problem with sandy soils, but with clayey, heavy soils, regular loosening is key.
Remember: the best nutrient is what the soil produces itself. Your task is merely to create the conditions for this. If the pH is right, the soil is aerated, and it regularly receives nutrients, the microorganisms will do the rest.
