The synergy of microorganisms and plants – how nature works

Nothing in nature works alone. Plants and soil microorganisms have evolved over millions of years in a cooperative relationship – a system where both parties give and receive. This synergy is also the foundation of your garden, even if you see nothing of it on the surface.

The Plant Gives – The Microorganism Returns

During photosynthesis, the plant produces sugars from sunlight. A significant portion of these sugars – according to some research, up to 20-30% – is released into the soil through its roots. Why would it waste so much energy?

Because it's not waste, but an investment. The sugar feeds the soil microorganisms, which in turn release and transport nutrients to the roots that the plant would not be able to access alone. Mycorrhizal fungi, for example, deliver phosphorus – one of the most difficult to access nutrients – directly to the roots, in exchange for which the plant pays with sugar.

A Closed, Yet Functional Cycle

This cooperation forms a closed cycle. The plant provides organic matter to the soil (root exudates, fallen leaves), the microorganisms break it down and transform it, the plant absorbs the released nutrients, and then produces new organic matter. If this cycle works, the system is self-sustaining – producing healthy plants with minimal external intervention.

But if the cycle breaks – microorganisms die, the soil becomes acidic, the structure compacts – the plant is left alone. This is when we observe the characteristic symptoms: yellowing, weak growth, susceptibility to diseases. The problem is not with the plant, but that it has lost its partner.

How Can You Support This Synergy?

Most importantly: don't just feed the plant, but the system. Adjusting the pH ensures that microorganisms remain active. Regular fertilization not only strengthens the plant but also maintains the soil's microbiological network. Loosening the soil structure ensures that both roots and microorganisms have access to the necessary oxygen.

The plant does not live alone – it cooperates. If you understand this, you will look at your garden differently: you will not see individual plants, but a living system that needs to be cared for as a whole.
