Ion exchange in soil – this is how bound nutrients are released

Gardeners often hear that nutrients are bound in the soil. But what exactly does this mean? And how can these elements be released without applying more fertilizer? The answer lies in a natural chemical process: ion exchange.

What is ion exchange?

The tiny clay particles and organic matter in the soil – known as soil colloids – have an electrical charge on their surface. This charge can bind positively charged ions: calcium, magnesium, potassium, and ammonium. When these ions attach to the surface of the colloids, they become bound – they are present in the soil, but plant roots cannot directly absorb them.

Ion exchange occurs when a more strongly bound ion displaces a less strongly bound one from the colloid surface. For example, when calcium is added to the soil, it displaces bound potassium and other elements, which then become dissolved and available to the plant.

Why is this important in your garden?

Most garden soils contain plenty of nutrients – just not in an accessible form. Yet, gardeners continue to apply more and more fertilizer because their plants show signs of nutrient deficiency. But the problem is not the quantity, but the availability.

If you understand ion exchange, you'll realize that the solution is not necessarily more nutrients, but rather the release of existing reserves. This is more efficient, more economical, and gentler on the soil.

How can you help the process?

Calcium is the engine of ion exchange. When you introduce a calcium-containing product – such as Kalcinol – into the soil, it not only raises the pH but also initiates ion exchange. Calcium ions displace bound nutrients from the surface of the colloids, making them available in the soil solution for roots to absorb.

Furthermore, magnesium also plays an important role – the two elements work more effectively together. Regular, conscious calcium and magnesium supplementation is therefore not just about pH, but about activating the entire nutrient balance.

Everything is already in the soil – you just need to set it in motion. Understanding ion exchange is one of the most important steps towards conscious gardening.
