
Why does the lawn turn yellow in spring? – The real reason is in the soil
It's spring, the sun is getting warmer, your neighbor's garden is already greening – but yours is still yellowish, with dry patches. Sound familiar? Most gardeners panic at this point: maybe the lawn is sick, maybe it didn't get enough water, maybe the grass seed is bad. But in most cases, the problem isn't with the grass, but with the soil.
Traces of winter in the soil
During the winter months, the soil temperature drops significantly, and with it, microbiological activity also declines. Bacteria and fungi, which normally break down organic matter and release nutrients, practically cease activity in winter. The nutrients are present in the soil, but remain in a bound, inaccessible form.
When the grass tries to restart in spring, it immediately needs nutrients – especially nitrogen and iron. But if the soil hasn't woken up yet, the plant will search for these elements in vain. The result: yellowing, slow growth, uneven color.
Not a nutrient deficiency – an accessibility problem
This misunderstanding leads to a lot of unnecessary fertilizing. Gardeners see the yellow grass and instinctively scatter more nutrients. But if the soil is unable to process and make these elements available, extra fertilizer won't help – in fact, it further burdens the soil and deteriorates its structure in the long run.
The solution is not to increase the quantity, but to activate the system. Starting the microbiological life of the soil is the first and most important step. If the bacteria and fungi start working again, the existing nutrients will be released, and the grass will quickly begin to green.
What can you do in spring?
First, check the soil pH – acidic soil inhibits the activity of microorganisms. If necessary, adjust to the optimal range with calcium (e.g., Kalcinol). Then, a nitrogen-containing nutrient solution, like Green Max, will bring quick results: the grass will start to green within a few days, while the roots also strengthen.
Spring yellowing is therefore not a disease and not a fatal problem. It is simply the soil's signal that it's time to restart the system. If you understand this signal and start with the soil, your lawn will green faster and more permanently than ever before.
